Testimonials

It was divine for me to be here. The workshop feedback gave me the direction I needed for edits and changes, but also gave me the confidence to go on.

I’m blown away. This has been so amazing. The instruction, the people, how much my work has improved, it’s more than I could have hoped for. There was enough “down” writing time for sure. Everyone at St. Mike’s is fantastic and very accommodating. I very much hope to return in the future.

My expectations were surpassed! The group critiques and one-on-on conversations were amazing. I can now visualize a manuscript I’m excited and focused to work on.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. I’m going to tell many of my friends to apply in the future. It’s hard to imagine the Experience without having been here. But it is definitely a way for writers to take their writing to a new level.

This writing experience has re-connected me with writers and my own work. I am prepared to pick up the work and move on. I felt a real connection and respect in my poetry group.

I really just wanted to write and get critiqued by an expert. Not an editor – an expert writer. This is what I got. In a week I wrote 5000+ words and had stimulating sessions where Lawrence Hill critiqued and encouraged me. Where I started with just a bunch of writing. I now feel I have a book.

Our workshop had the right mix of structure, free time, and availability of the instructor for private evaluations of my work.

Our instructor, Helen Humphreys, was very generous with her time, reading extra material and making herself available for multiple private sessions at the strudents’ request. Her group sessions were insightful and professional, and she was extremely encouraging to all of her students.

I felt that there was an excellent balance of time for working, for classes and for socializing/relaxing. I came into Sage Hill as a “fake” writer and left a “real” writer. The lessons learned here will last a lifetime. I think the ten day period is perfect. The facilities and the staff are excellent. The atmosphere created by staff, instructors and fellow writers is sublime.

This is my second time at Sage Hill and I continue to be amazed by the talented by humble faculty, the skill level of the participants who attend from all over Canada, and the infinite patience of Philip in helping us stay focused on our reason for being here. This year I was working with Larry Hill and I made a very important break-through, I learned how to self edit. Most writers are supposed to know and I thought I did, until Larry took me through a few chapters with a black pen, “cutting” my purple prose without restraint. I am grateful for the opportunity to shut out the world and just write while someone else cooks my meals, does my dishes and provides me with clean sheets and towels.

Sage is the exact right length–––more and it would be overwhelming, less and it would be inadequate. Being able to spend this much time in community with other writers is so important to me—knowing other people feel the way I do about text keeps me sane. Sage Hill gave me the time, space and guidance to work out what I was doing. I arrived with fragments, but I’ll leave with a vision.
